good memory: The best memory of Horace Slughorn is the occasion when he was presented with a fish, named Francis, after his mother, by Lily Evans.

history: Horace E.F. Slughorn was born on the 19th of July, 1900. A gifted child, Slughorn swept through Primary School with straight A’s. Entering Hogwarts at age 11, Slughorn was sorted into Slytherin House, where he began to surround himself with the children of famous personages, such as the son of the editor of the Daily Prophet. Slughorn was the highest scoring Slytherin on the O.W.L. tests until Tom Riddle in the 1940’s, with all O’s, sans one A in Charms. After traveling the world, and serving a brief stint in the French Foreign Legion, Slughorn returned to Hogwarts to teach in 1929. At the age of 29, Slughorn was the youngest of the staff, and would remain so until Minerva McGonagall became a professor. Slughorn’s reign as potions master, and head of Slytherin House, lasted 50 years. His wife, Dolores, who he met and married in 1934, died of an attack of Dragon Pox in 1958. They had no children. To recover from the loss, Slughorn threw himself headlong into his work at Hogwarts.

After his sixtieth birthday, Slughorn began laciviously collecting students, far moreso than ever, to the extent that Lily Evans and Severus Snape, two of his most adept potions brewers, became his closest student confidants until Snape became a Death Eater. Slughorn was a member of the Original Order of the Phoenix, and was part of several of the higher profile fights with Death Eaters during the war; despite his age, Slughorn has remained an expert duelist. In 1979, Slughorn retired, with a brief vacation to Majorica. He attended the funerals of James and Lily Potter, and was known to have visited the Longbottoms in St. Mungos on various occasions, Frank being a former member of the so-called “Slug club.” Slughorn has enjoyed a happy retirement since 1980, travelling the world, and attending the Quidditch World Cup annually. Along with the annual Slug Club reunion Christmas Gala, he also hosts regular dinner parties for various friends, and privileged cohorts. Slughorn has been offered senior Ministry positions several times, but has refused each time, prefering to keep behind the scenes and "collect." Slughorn is a devout Quidditch fan of the Hollyhead Harpies, due to the vast majority of the team being former Slug Club members. Slughorn also patronizes endowments for Wizarding Education, and a Junior Quidditch League.

In 1996, Slughorn, who had been on the run since Albus Dumbledore had announced Voldemort’s return in 1995, was asked to return to Hogwarts to teach potions. He finally consented, and has returned to fill his old post at last.

favorite thing: Potions. Slughorn has always enjoyed potions, being a holder of the Silver Medal for Ground Breaking Contributions to the International Alchemical Conference at Cairo for his Amnesia Solution.
despised thing: Voldemort. Slughorn hates him with a passion since Tom began killing.
personality: Happy, jovial, easily frightened. Likes to surround himself with class and power at all hazards, due to a rather insecure and poor past. Very strong dislike of what Tom Riddle (Voldemort) has become, and an immense disgust with Death Eaters in general. Does not care about blood status as is evidenced by his fondness for Lily Evans. Notorious for Black Market potions supply dealings and liquor intake.

Slughorn is known to be easily intimidated. This is evidenced by how concerned he was that the Death Eaters would seek him out after Voldemort’s return. He is also known to be ridiculously paranoid, moving house every week, and confounding the neighbors each time. All in all, he is wondering if it’s worth all the moving, or if he should have let himself stay and be killed.
